Before the 10th century, the right bank of Paris used to be made up with swamps, which dried up when religious communities settled there.
In 1176, cultivating was allowed, and « Le Marais » was inhabited by Kings, the last one being Henri II.
When he died, "Catherine de Medicis" had everything destroyed and settled in Le Louvre.
From 1545, estates were built, streets were opened, and Henri IV laid out the « Place des Vosges ».
Neglected in the next centuries, Le Marais is classified in 1962, after being razed between 1936 and 1965.

PORT MORT and SURROUNDINGS

Located less than 100 kilometers far from Paris, in the valley of the Seine (towards Rouen), situated in a triangle formed by Les Andelys, Vernon and Gaillon, Port Mort is a peaceful village in "Haute Normandie", with a rich history, whose numerous facets you will discover when you come.

In Port Mort (English territory he had taken possession of), Philippe Auguste built a little castle, high-situated, and called it Châteauneuf.
Under this castle was St Martin's Church.
In May 1200, this church was the scene of a historical event: the wedding of Blanche de Castille and King-to-be Louis VIII, Philippe Auguste's son.
The wedding could not take place in France.
